Coke Studio’s globally popular song “Pasoori” has reached a historic milestone, becoming the first music video made in Pakistan to surpass one billion views on YouTube.

Released more than four years ago, the Punjabi-language song has continued to attract audiences around the world, establishing itself as one of Pakistan’s most successful musical exports.

“Pasoori” was performed by Pakistani singers Ali Sethi and Shae Gill and released in February 2022 as part of Coke Studio Pakistan Season 14. The song was written by Sethi and Fazal Abbas, while renowned producer Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan, better known as Xulfi, was behind its production.

The track combines traditional South Asian musical influences with contemporary pop elements, creating a distinctive sound that helped it connect with listeners across different countries and cultures.

‘Pasoori’ Becomes a Global Hit

Following its release, “Pasoori” quickly moved beyond Pakistan’s music scene and became a major international streaming success.

In 2022, the song reached No. 3 on Spotify’s Global Viral 50 chart and became the platform’s most-streamed Pakistani song of that year. It also featured among Google’s most-searched songs globally in 2022.

Coke Studio Pakistan celebrated the latest achievement on social media with the message, “From Pakistan to the world,” highlighting the song’s extraordinary international journey.

The platform said the song had transformed from a simple musical release into a global cultural moment, crediting millions of listeners who streamed it, sang along to it and shared their own interpretations.

Meaning Behind ‘Pasoori’

The word “Pasoori” broadly refers to a difficult situation, complication or predicament. The song explores themes of love, separation, longing and the barriers that keep people apart.

Its emotional lyrics, distinctive composition and fusion of traditional and modern sounds helped make it particularly popular among international audiences.

From Coke Studio to Global Pop Culture

The song’s popularity was further amplified through social media and streaming platforms, where artists and fans from different parts of the world created covers, performances and reinterpretations.

“Pasoori” also crossed into international entertainment. The track was featured in the Disney+ Marvel series “Ms. Marvel,” introducing it to an even wider global audience.

Its popularity also led to an Indian adaptation titled “Pasoori Nu,” which was featured in the 2023 Bollywood film “Satyaprem Ki Katha.”

A Historic Milestone for Pakistani Music

Crossing one billion YouTube views marks a significant moment for Pakistan’s contemporary music industry and highlights the growing international reach of Pakistani artists and productions.

From its debut on Coke Studio Pakistan to becoming a worldwide streaming phenomenon, “Pasoori” has demonstrated how a song rooted in South Asian musical traditions can connect with audiences across borders.

Coke Studio Pakistan thanked listeners for contributing to the achievement, saying: “From all of us at Coke Studio Pakistan, thank you for making history with us.”
