Bat for Lashes (Natasha Khan): Biography, Music Career, Awards and Major Performances

Bat for Lashes, the celebrated stage name of Natasha Khan, is one of the most distinctive and imaginative artists to emerge from the British alternative music scene. Known for her haunting vocals, cinematic songwriting, theatrical performances and dreamlike visual style, Khan has built a career that consistently moves beyond conventional pop music. As a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, visual artist and filmmaker, she has created a body of work that combines alternative pop, indie rock, electronic music, folk influences and experimental soundscapes.

Born on 25 October 1979 in London, England, Natasha Khan is the daughter of a Pakistani father, Rehmat Khan, and an English mother. She grew up mainly in England and developed an interest in music and art from an early age. She taught herself to play piano when she was around 11 and later studied visual art at the University of Brighton. Her background in visual arts became an important part of her musical identity, helping her develop the elaborate characters, stories, costumes and cinematic worlds that would become central to Bat for Lashes.

Who Is Bat for Lashes?

Bat for Lashes is the artistic project of Natasha Khan. Rather than following a conventional singer-songwriter formula, Khan approaches albums as complete artistic worlds. Her songs frequently explore love, identity, mortality, spirituality, femininity, relationships, transformation and motherhood.

Her ability to combine music with visual storytelling has made her particularly recognizable. Her music videos often feel like short films, while her live performances incorporate theatrical movement, distinctive costumes, atmospheric lighting and carefully designed stage imagery.

Khan first attracted significant attention with her debut album Fur and Gold, released in 2006. The record introduced audiences to her ethereal voice and unusual approach to alternative pop. Songs such as “What’s a Girl to Do?”, “The Wizard” and “Horse and I” established the mysterious aesthetic that would become synonymous with Bat for Lashes. Fur and Gold was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and helped establish Khan as one of Britain's most promising new alternative artists.

Rise to International Recognition

The success of Fur and Gold opened the door to major opportunities. Khan performed at important festivals and venues and also became a supporting act for Radiohead, giving her music exposure to a much larger international audience. Her striking visual presentation and unconventional songwriting quickly helped her stand apart from other artists of the period.

Her breakthrough continued with Two Suns, released in 2009. The album was more ambitious and conceptual, revolving around the fictional alter ego Pearl and themes of duality, desire, identity and emotional conflict. It became a Top Five album in the UK and received another Mercury Prize nomination. The album's best-known song, “Daniel,” became one of Khan's signature tracks and ultimately won an Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song.

The success of “Daniel” also helped establish Bat for Lashes internationally. Khan appeared on major television and music programs, including Later... with Jools Holland, The Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Her live performances became an important part of her growing reputation.

A Career Built Around Reinvention

One of Natasha Khan's greatest strengths is her willingness to reinvent herself. Instead of repeating the sound of her most successful albums, she has repeatedly explored new musical and emotional territory.

Her third studio album, The Haunted Man, arrived in 2012. It became another Top 10 UK album and demonstrated a more intimate and restrained side of Khan's songwriting. Tracks such as “Laura” highlighted her ability to combine emotional vulnerability with sophisticated production.

In 2015, Khan also explored psychedelic and world-folk influences through the SEXWITCH project, a collaboration involving producer Dan Carey and the band TOY. This demonstrated her broader interest in experimental music and her desire to work outside the traditional boundaries of her main Bat for Lashes project.

Her fourth album, The Bride, followed in 2016. It was another narrative-driven concept album, telling a dramatic story through music and reinforcing Khan's reputation as an artist who treats albums almost like cinematic productions.

In 2019, she released Lost Girls, an album influenced by 1980s synth-pop, Los Angeles imagery and cinematic storytelling. The record included songs such as “The Hunger” and further demonstrated Khan's ability to merge nostalgia with contemporary alternative pop.

The Dream of Delphi: A New Creative Chapter

One of the most important recent developments in Natasha Khan's career is her sixth Bat for Lashes album, The Dream of Delphi, released in May 2024.

The album was deeply influenced by motherhood and Khan's experience of becoming a mother during the COVID-19 pandemic. Named after her daughter Delphi, the project explores creation, birth, femininity, ancestry, spirituality and the emotional transformation that comes with motherhood.

Rather than treating The Dream of Delphi simply as another collection of songs, Khan expanded the project into a broader artistic experience. It incorporated visual storytelling, performance, poetry and the Motherwitch concept, including a hand-illustrated tarot deck. The project demonstrates how Khan continues to blur the boundaries between music, film, theatre and visual art.

The album also received significant attention for its intimate and experimental character. Khan's approach became more personal while still maintaining the mystical atmosphere that has defined Bat for Lashes throughout her career.

Latest Career Update: 2026

As of 2026, Bat for Lashes remains an active creative project. One of the biggest recent milestones has been the 20th-anniversary celebration of Fur and Gold.

A remastered edition of the landmark debut was released in February 2026, featuring additional material including live performances, B-sides and demos connected with the early period of Khan's career. The anniversary has also renewed interest in the album and the origins of Bat for Lashes.

In February 2026, Khan also participated in a detailed discussion about the making of Fur and Gold, reflecting on the album two decades after its original release.

She also performed a special 20th-anniversary-era show at Rough Trade Denmark Street in London on 14 February 2026. Current listings indicate that there are no upcoming Bat for Lashes shows announced at present, making the anniversary activity an important recent chapter in her live career.
