Performance highlights and selected moments
Mulazim Hussain is a Pakistani singer, songwriter, composer and performer recognized for his distinctive voice and his work across Sufi, Pakistani classical, folk, ghazal and contemporary music. Originally associated with Rawalpindi, he developed an interest in music from childhood and began learning the harmonium at around eight years old. His musical background and interest in traditional South Asian vocal styles eventually led him toward professional singing and national television.
Mulazim Hussain first gained widespread attention through the Indo-Pakistani singing competition Sur Kshetra in 2012. The show proved to be an important turning point in his career, giving him an opportunity to perform before major names in South Asian music and introducing his powerful, earthy vocal tone to audiences in Pakistan and India. He later became one of the recognized voices associated with Coke Studio Pakistan Season 8, further establishing his position in the country's contemporary music scene.
Early Life and Musical Journey
Music was an important part of Mulazim Hussain's life from an early age. He began experimenting with the harmonium as a child and gradually developed his singing abilities. His musical influences include legendary Pakistani voices, and sources have also highlighted his family's connection with the musical heritage associated with artists such as Mehdi Hassan and Reshma.
Rather than relying only on contemporary pop, Mulazim developed a vocal identity rooted in the traditional South Asian singing style. His ability to bring emotional depth and a strong tonal character to his performances became one of the qualities that distinguished him from many emerging singers.
Breakthrough on Sur Kshetra
The biggest early breakthrough in Mulazim Hussain's career came in 2012 when he participated in Sur Kshetra, the Pakistan-India musical reality show.
The competition featured some of the region's most respected music personalities, including Asha Bhosle, Abida Parveen and Runa Laila, while leading singers and composers were involved with the competing teams. Mulazim progressed to the finalist stage, competing alongside other Pakistani singers including Nabeel Shaukat Ali.
His performances on Sur Kshetra earned him considerable attention. Dawn later described his rendition of “Daman Lagiyan Maula” with Abida Parveen as a performance that helped establish him as a singer to watch. The experience also opened doors to concerts, television appearances and other professional opportunities.
Coke Studio Pakistan Journey
Following the success of Sur Kshetra, Mulazim Hussain reached another major milestone when he became part of Coke Studio Pakistan Season 8 in 2015.
His Coke Studio work included “Rabba Ho,” an original track particularly close to the singer, and “Meri Humjoliyan,” a rendition associated with the musical legacy of Reshma and performed with Fizza Javed.
“Rabba Ho” became especially notable. Dawn reported that the song was the third most-viewed track of Coke Studio Season 8 at the time, giving Mulazim considerable exposure among mainstream Pakistani music listeners.
His performance demonstrated that a singer with a strong traditional vocal foundation could successfully adapt to Coke Studio's modern production environment without losing his original character.
