Hamid Ali Khan, known as Ustad Hamid Ali Khan, is a classical vocalist from Pakistan. One of the most famous vocal classical music families, the Patiala Gharana, is where he started singing ghazal, khayal, and thumris. Among his siblings are the legendary classical musicians’ Ustad Amanat Ali Khan and Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan, of whom he is the youngest brother.
Khan will be 69 years old in 2022. He was born in Pakistan in 1953. His father, the famed classical vocalist Ustad Akhtar Hussain Khan, taught him to play the sarod, and he later sang in the court of the Maharaja of Patiala.
Hamid is widely regarded as the sole surviving practitioner of the Patiala Gharana’s classical singing lineage following the passing of Ustad Fateh Ali Khan in 2017. He was honored with the Pride of Performance Award, Pakistan’s highest literary honor, by the country’s president in 2007.
Family and Background of Hamid Ali Khan
Ustad grew up in a Muslim home in Punjab, Pakistan. His father, the classical singer Ustad Akhtar Hussain Khan, performed in the Maharaja of Patiala’s court. Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan’s two elder brothers, Ustad Amanat Ali Khan and Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, were also chosen to sing at the court of Maharaja Yadavinder Singh of Patiala.
The three sons of the legendary musician Ustad Hamid Ali Khan—Nayab Ali Khan, Wali Hamid Ali Khan, and Inam Ali Khan—have founded the Sufi rock band Raga Boyz. Both his sons, Nayab Ali and Inam Ali are talented musicians who perform in various genres. Wali Hamid Ali Khan, his son, dabbled in acting and singing. It was in the TV series “Kaisi Aurat Hun Main” that he first appeared on camera.
Mian Kallu, his great-grandfather, was a traditional Hindustani musician and singer, and he established the Patiala Gharana. Jarnail Ali Baksh Khan, his grandfather, sang in the court of the Maharaja of Patiala with “Colonel” Fateh Ali Khan.
The career of Hamid Ali Khan
Hindustani classical music, including thumri, khayal, and ghazals, is performed by him. He began his career singing with his nephew Amjad Amanat Ali Khan, as is customary in the Patiala Gharana. Following Amjad’s departure for London, Hamid Ali Khan began performing alongside his other nephew, Asad Amanat Ali Khan. After Asad Amanat Ali Khan’s untimely death, Hamid Ali Khan was left to handle the workload alone despite the duet’s enormous success.
He has recorded more than a hundred of his brother Amanat Ali Khan’s ghazals. His most well-known ghazals are “Laagi Re Tose Lagi” and “Menu Tere Jiya Sohna,” both of which have become fan favorites. “Raag Se Geet Tak” (1981), “Yaad E Maazi” (1990), “Phool Khilne They Abhi” (2006), “Ragas: Malkauns, Mian Ki Malhar & Megh” (2006), “Ik Roz Tamanna Ke” (2018), and “Zikar E Yesu” (2019) are some of his most well-known albums (2020).
Ustad Khan’s rendition of “Piya Dekhan Ko” from Coke Studio Season 10 in 2015 was a highlight of the year. During the 2016 All Pakistan Music Festival in Karachi, he appeared alongside his older brother, Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan. In 2017, he released an album named “Dil Tau Kehta Hai,” which consists entirely of ghazals. Featuring Nimra Khan and Wali Hamid Khan of the Sufi rock band Raga Boyz, Ustad Hamid Ali Khan’s “Karam” (2021) CD is a fusion of classical music with Sufi rock.
