Sanam Marvi is a Pakistani singer who sings folk music and Sufi. She sings in Punjabi, Saraiki and Sindhi languages. Early Life of Sanam Marvi
She was born in Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan, on April 17, 1986. The family was poor. When Sanam was only two years old, her father was killed because of a land dispute. After he was killed, Sanam and her mother were kicked out of the house. She and her mother wound up at a Sufi shrine. At the shrine of this Sindhi saint, a woman asked her mother to cook for her family. Her mother took the job without thinking about it. It turned out that she had met a pimp.
While cooking at a brothel, a faqir approached her and asked if he could marry her. Her mother agreed to marry. When Sanam was still young, her stepfather started teaching her music. Faqeer Ghulam Rasool, her father, was also a folk singer from Sindh. Sufi music has been a part of Marvi’s life since he was seven.
After she learned the basics, she studied with Ustad Fateh Ali Khan and then the famous Abida Parveen. Marvi has been a massive fan of Parveen since he was a child. It has been a blessing for him to learn how Parveen sings and uses Sindhi and Punjabi poetry. By the time she was 16, Marvi was known for her singing of Bulleh Shah and Ghulam Fareed’s Sufi poetry.
The Career of Sanam Marvi
In 2009, Sanam Marvi made her first appearance on the music show “Virsa Heritage,” hosted by Yousuf Salahuddin and aired on the Pakistan Television Corporation channel. She likes to say he is like a father to her because he gave her a big break in the Pakistani entertainment business.
She started performing solo at a Sufi festival called “Jahan e Khusrau” in 2010. She also got to work with the Indian singer Rekha Bhardwaj in 2011.
