Here, music is not respected. My family is not even mildly interested in music. As a member of a family of authors, it seemed inevitable that I would become one myself. I participated in talent shows in high school and college. In my teenage years, I pursued training in classical music. Before I knew it, I was immersed in singing. Together with J Ali, I established a manufacturing firm in Lahore. He would compose while I would perform. Additionally, we performed several songs for television and movies.
What does Syed Asrar Shah think about Sufi music?
The poetry of the Sufis has always fascinated him. A lot of his childhood nights were spent wondering about the meaning of life and the cosmos. He’d like to correct the widespread misconception that Sufi music is a genre of music. You can tell the difference between western rock and rap and western classical music by the instruments used, and the same is true of eastern classical music with forms like thumri and alaap. But the Sufi way of thinking. Sufis consider themselves to be temples of God. There is no spiritual significance to this at all. The topic at hand is the discussion of the divine.
